Transactional vs Promotional SMS: What Is the Difference?
Two kinds of business SMS with different goals, timing and consent expectations, and how to use both without annoying customers.
Business SMS falls into two broad groups. Transactional messages are triggered by something the customer did or owes, and they expect to receive them. Promotional messages are marketing: offers, launches and invitations sent to encourage a purchase or visit.
Transactional SMS
- One-time passwords (OTP) and login verification codes.
- Payment receipts, loan disbursements and account alerts.
- Order confirmations, delivery updates and booking confirmations.
- Appointment, fee and premium reminders for an existing relationship.
Transactional SMS must be fast and reliable, so they are usually sent automatically from your system through an SMS API at the moment the event happens. They should contain only the information the customer needs, not marketing.
Promotional SMS
- Discounts, weekend offers and seasonal sales.
- New product, branch or service announcements.
- Event invitations and loyalty rewards.
Promotional SMS are usually sent as campaigns from a dashboard to a contact group. Send them only to people who have agreed to hear from you, at reasonable hours, and give a simple way to opt out. Over-messaging leads to complaints and lower response.
Keep the two separate
Mixing an offer into an OTP or receipt makes the important message harder to read and erodes trust. Many businesses use a separate sender ID or contact group for marketing so customers can tell at a glance what kind of message they have received.
